WHOM WE SEEK:
Saint Michael and All Angels is seeking an Organ Scholar to join its vibrant and growing Music Department for the 2026–27 academic year. This one-year, paid position is designed for a talented and aspiring organist who is passionate about sacred music and discerning a potential vocation in church music. The Organ Scholar will play a full and active role in the musical life of Saint Michael and All Angels, supporting choral worship in the Anglican tradition, gaining extensive hands-on experience in playing, accompaniment, and conducting, within a large and dynamic Episcopal parish setting. The post is ideal for a recent graduate or early-career musician who is looking to build skills and experience in Anglican liturgy and choral accompaniment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Accompany and support choral rehearsals, services, and occasional concerts under the supervision of the Director of Music and the Principal Organist.
- Assist in the training and accompaniment of the Chorister program.
- Play regularly for weekday, Sunday liturgies, and special services and be available as needed for funerals and weddings. Funerals and weddings would bring additional compensation.
- Assist with organ maintenance, registrations, and music library management.
- Help prepare music and materials for rehearsals and services.
- Assist with administrative, logistical, and outreach support for the department.
- Participate fully in departmental planning meetings and creative discussions.
- Receive weekly coaching and mentorship to develop service playing, hymn playing, liturgical planning, and leadership skills.
- Receive regular opportunities for solo organ performance and conducting (as appropriate).

CORE COMPETENCIES:
- Bachelor’s degree in music (or equivalent experience)
- Excellent keyboard skills with a strong foundation in traditional hymnody, Anglican chant, and liturgical repertoire
- Excellent ability in accompanying choirs and working in a liturgical setting
- Ability to work collaboratively within a team
- Excellent sight-reading and score preparation skills
- Basic conducting skills and a willingness to grow in this area (preferred)
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and basic digital file management
- Strong time management and organizational skills
- Familiarity with the Episcopal Church or Anglican liturgical tradition is preferred, but not required
- Ability to learn and effectively use Pushpay and other church management software systems.
This is a part-time position beginning August 1, 2026, and concluding July 31, 2027. This position includes working 50 out of 52 weeks encompassing time away, vacation and sick leave, taken with the advice and consent of the Director of Music. Please note that the position does not include insurance coverage or pension. Housing is not provided.
