Contemporary Music at Saint Michael and All Angels
Saint Michael Contemporary
In Saint Michael Contemporary, you will find music crafted by musicians who have extensive experience in classical, rock, folk, jazz, and a heart to lead worship in the beauty of holiness.
Using guitars, piano, strings, percussion, double bass, and other instruments from all over the world, one may hear a 15th - 18th century hymn, a current worship song, or a song they have heard on the radio in the same service. The music of Saint Michael Contemporary is an exciting blend of sounds that lead in a Christ-centered, rich worship experience connected to an ancient faith that fosters hope for here and now.
Music for Joy: A Children’s Service
The music experience at this joy-filled, casual communion service is designed with children ages 0-5 and their parents in mind. Led by musicians from our Contemporary service, families will enjoy fun, easy-to-learn, theologically rich songs that allow our little ones to use hand motions, move around, and be the amazing kids God made them. There are also teaching moments throughout the year on the various instruments the band plays and what they do. At the end of every service, there is an opportunity for the kids to be a member of the band, joining them on rhythm sticks, shakers, woodblocks, and other fascinating instruments!
Youth Worship Music
Every Sunday night during the school year, the students of Saint Michael come together for a time of worship through song. Led by Contemporary music director Justin Brooks and student musicians, the goal of this time together is to allow students connect with God in a musical language that is their own, and to equip them with songs to help them in their spiritual journey during the week. If you or your student is a vocalist or instrumentalist and interested in joining the youth music team, please contact Justin at [email protected].
Jazz Services
Jazz is a communal art form that provokes emotion, rejuvenates the soul, and when intertwined with lyrics that point us to God, can help us explore our faith. A new Saint Michael tradition, every Christmas Eve at 1 p.m. our Contemporary music ministry leads a jazz service with award-winning and acclaimed jazz musicians. Reminiscent of Vince Guaraldi’s use of piano, bass, drums, and woodwinds, this service is one of the most anticipated of the year. The congregation can also enjoy a jazz concert every Mardi Gras at our Shrove Tuesday Celebration. Stay tuned as more jazz experiences will be added throughout the year!
Original Compositions and Arrangements
Contemporary music at Saint Michael has a rich and robust tradition of composing and arranging original music for the Church. Many of these songs have been sung by churches across the United States. Whether service music, SMAA podcast music, string quartet arrangements, hymns, or new arrangements of ancient prayers, our services throughout the year will incorporate music written by our music staff and congregation members.
