SUMMARY:10 to 20: The Science of Motivating Young People
DESCRIPTION:Group: Parent Class \nIn Room 212 \nLed by Clergy and Staff \nSundays\, January 10-February 28 \nImagine a world in which parents interact with young people in ways that leave their children feeling inspired\, enthusiastic\, and ready to contribute—rather than disengaged\, outraged\, or overwhelmed. Around age ten\, puberty spurs the brain to crave socially rewarding experiences\, such as pride\, admiration\, and respect\, and to become highly averse to social pain\, such as humiliation or shame. As a result\, young people begin to subtly read between the lines of everything parents say\, trying to interpret the hidden implications of their words to find out if they are disrespecting or honoring them. The key is to adopt the mentor mindset attuned to young people’s need for status and respect by following a few highly effective and easy-to-learn practices. This study offers parents long-term strategies to help nurture well-adjusted\, independent\, accomplished young people who make a difference in the world.

SUMMARY:Job and the Problem of Suffering
DESCRIPTION:Group: Engaging the Word (Bible Series) \nIn Room 203 \nLed by the Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata \nSundays\, February 7-28 \nWhy is there such suffering? Where is God when life is painful or unjust? Join our Rector\, Chris Girata\, for a four-week exploration of the Book of Job\, one of Scripture’s most powerful examinations of suffering\, faith\, and the mystery of God. Along the way\, we will wrestle with the problem of evil and pain in the world and consider why Scripture sometimes challenges easy explanations for suffering. Together\, we will ask what Job can teach us about how we can remain faithful to God when life does not make sense.

SUMMARY:Prayer Book Spirituality: Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Group: Faith and Practice Series \nIn Room 201 \nLed by the Rev. Kenneth H. Brannon \nSundays\, February 7-21 \n“All may\, some should\, none must.” Many of us have heard this famous saying about confession in The Episcopal Church. We don’t demand that everyone partakes of this sacrament\, but those who have experienced it can tell you it’s a source of deep joy\, freedom\, and healing. In this class\, we will consider the biblical\, theological\, and psychological rationales for repentance and forgiveness. We will look at how this rite has evolved over time and across denominations. And we will walk through the two forms of reconciliation provided in our prayer book\, so participants can consider whether they might be called to partake of this sacramental gift\, particularly in Lent.

SUMMARY:Lectio Divina
DESCRIPTION:Group: Lectio Divina \nRoom 200 \nLed by Nancy Somodevilla \nTake some time to get out of the hurried ways of life and the noise around us to draw close to God with others through Lectio Divina. This is a contemplative way of reading the Bible or other texts and was established by Benedict in the 6th century. It provides a time of meditation and quiet focusing upon a reading or even art\, followed by discussion and growth with others. Lectio is not a Bible study or even an alternative to Bible study but something radically different. It understands Scripture as a meeting place for a personal encounter with the living God. All you need is a desire to change. Please join us. For more information\, contact Nancy Somodevilla at arkodevilla@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Rector’s Bible Study: Season 10
DESCRIPTION:In Parish Hall \nJoin our rector\, Chris Girata\, as he guides us through Matthew’s Gospel this year. Matthew is unique for its strong emphasis on Jesus as the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy and as the long-awaited Jewish Messiah. Matthew contains extensive teaching sections\, including the Sermon on the Mount\, which places special focus on righteousness\, discipleship\, and the Kingdom of Heaven. SUMMARY:March 2027 Holy Land Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:March 11 – 22\, 2027\nYou and your family are invited to join our rector\, Chris Girata\, to spend 11 days following in the footsteps of Christ in the spring of 2027. \nThis pilgrimage\, featuring visits to some of the most notable sites in the history of our faith\, is not to be missed! \nIf you are interested in going on the Holy Land trip\, please reach out to Bhav Masih at bmasih@saintmichael.org. \n\n\nRegistration Instruction Guide \nThis pilgrimage is an invitation to step into the story of our faith together. Over 11 days\, we’ll journey through the Holy Land\, standing in places we know from Scripture and taking time to slow down\, reflect\, and pray as those stories come to life. There is something uniquely powerful about seeing these places with your own eyes—about realizing that the Bible is rooted in real geography\, real people\, and real moments in history. For many\, it becomes a deeply meaningful and formative experience that reshapes how they read Scripture long after returning home. \nI’m very pleased that Sam Moore (Director of Youth Ministries) and Cydni Joubert (Asst. Director of Children and Family Ministries) are planning to join me on the trip. We are intentionally inviting families to be part of this pilgrimage. Throughout the trip\, students and adults will have daily opportunities to reflect together on what we’re seeing and experiencing. Our hope is that this shared journey creates space for meaningful conversations\, spiritual growth\, and lasting memories—both within your family and within our church community. \nThe estimated price per person (everything for the trip except airfare to and from Tel Aviv) is currently $4\,700 per person. This price is for double occupancy and an extra fee of $2\,100 will apply to anyone desiring a single occupancy room. Trip participation is prioritized in the following order: \n(1) Saint Michael members in good standing with children going on the trip\, \n(2) non-Saint Michael members with children going on the trip \n(3) Saint Michael members in good standing without children going on the trip. \nAlthough everyone should plan to register at the same time on March 2\, we will allow 24 hours for registrations before confirming who makes it on the trip and who is on the waiting list. To register\, we require a non-refundable deposit of $1000 for each person\, with more details available on our website. Please note that deposits will be returned to anyone who does not make the trip (remains on the waiting list). \nNote: If you choose to pay your deposit by check\, you must remit payment to the church office by 4 p.m. on the same day you register in order to hold your place. \nClick here to review the Terms and Conditions. \nReach out to Bhav Masih (bmasih@saintmichael.org) if you have any questions. \n\n\nView the full itinerary \nFRIDAY\, MARCH 12Arrive in Tel Aviv\, travel to Jerusalem \nSATURDAY\, MARCH 13Jerusalem and Bethlehem \nSUNDAY\, MARCH 14Walking Tour: Jerusalem Old City\, Masada \nMONDAY\, MARCH 15Petra\, Jordan \nTUESDAY\, MARCH 16Jaresh\, Beit She’an\, Tiberias \nWEDNESDAY\, MARCH 17Nazareth \nTHURSDAY\, MARCH 18Sea of Galilee\, Capernaum\, Mt. of Beatitudes \nFRIDAY\, MARCH 19Mt. Carmel\, Haifa\, Caesarea \nSATURDAY\, MARCH 20Mount of Olives\, Gethsemane\, Via Dolorosa\, and Church of the Holy Sepulchre \nSUNDAY\, MARCH 21Yad Vashem\, Ein Karem \nRead more about past Holy Land Trips \nThe Family Pilgrimage to the Holy Land was a wonderful trip for our family. Rooted in the footsteps of Christ\, it grounded each of us in our Christianity as we saw\, touched and understood better than ever before the most important moments in the New Testament. \nFor me personally\, the trip has had even more of an impact now that I am home. My regular worship has come alive as I listen to the Gospel and know I have traveled on those same paths\, been in those same caves\, and witnessed where the stories of the Bible unfolded. It has made it all so much more real and tangible for me\, and the blessing of that is that it has increased my faith. \n–Diana Newton \nTraveling to the Holy Land with wonderful friends from Saint Michael (old and new!) was definitely one of our family’s very deepest cultural and religious experiences. The things we learned\, saw\, and felt are beyond words. The team from SMAA planned the trip in the perfect way to help deepen our faith\, encourage fellowship\, and better understand the origins of Christianity. If you have the opportunity to take this trip\, then by all means – GO! \n–Karen Schoelkopf
