SUMMARY:O Come All Ye Faithful (and Chorus): The History of Christmas Carols
DESCRIPTION:Group: Faith and Practice Series \nIn Room 201 \nLed by Sammy Sweet and Jordan DeRouen \nSundays\, November 29-December 20 \nJoin us for a look at the stories behind some of our most beloved Christmas carols\, led by Director of Music Samuel K. Sweet and Principal Organist Jordan DeRouen. Together they’ll trace how these familiar melodies took shape – from the World War I story behind “Silent Night” to the French origins of “Angels We Have Heard on High” – and what has made them endure at the heart of our celebration of Christmas. Grab a cup of hot chocolate and come learn why we sing what we sing.

SUMMARY:10 to 20: The Science of Motivating Young People
DESCRIPTION:Group: Parent Class \nIn Room 212 \nLed by Clergy and Staff \nSundays\, January 10-February 28 \nImagine a world in which parents interact with young people in ways that leave their children feeling inspired\, enthusiastic\, and ready to contribute—rather than disengaged\, outraged\, or overwhelmed. Around age ten\, puberty spurs the brain to crave socially rewarding experiences\, such as pride\, admiration\, and respect\, and to become highly averse to social pain\, such as humiliation or shame. As a result\, young people begin to subtly read between the lines of everything parents say\, trying to interpret the hidden implications of their words to find out if they are disrespecting or honoring them. The key is to adopt the mentor mindset attuned to young people’s need for status and respect by following a few highly effective and easy-to-learn practices. This study offers parents long-term strategies to help nurture well-adjusted\, independent\, accomplished young people who make a difference in the world.

SUMMARY:Disciple-ing Your Grandchildren
DESCRIPTION:Group: Faith and Practice Series \nIn Room 201 \nLed by Dr. Tim Smith \nSundays\, January 10-31 \nIn the modern West\, retirement is sometimes looked at as slowing down\, doing less and doing what you want. But what does God want from us as we retire? Throughout the Bible\, the older generation is charged with spiritual responsibility. Seniors are given honor and wisdom that is meant to be passed on to others. Psalm 78:4 says\, “We will not hide them from their children\, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord.” Grandparents are meant to be spiritual stewards\, not spectators. You’re not a backup parent. You’re a living witness\, having seen God’s faithfulness over decades. You’ve walked through loss\, waited through silence\, and rejoiced in mercy. But how do you disciple your grandchildren? It starts with seeing your role differently: not as “retired\,” but re-assigned. Through this study\, you will learn how crucial your role as a grandparent really is\, be motivated to invest in your most important legacy and learn many wonderful practical helps on how just to do that.

SUMMARY:Ruth: God's Provision of Hope
DESCRIPTION:Group: Engaging the Word (Bible Series) \nIn Room 203 \nLed by the Rev. Dr. Sally Lombardo \nSundays\, January 10-31 \nThe story of Ruth explores how God’s sovereign purposes are at work even when life is hard and all seems lost. A short folktale about famine and family\, the book of Ruth explores the power of loyalty and restoration in an exiled community during the time of the judges in Isreal. Ruth’s relationship with Naomi\, her mother-in-law\, teaches lessons about God’s provision alongside the courage and prayer of two faithful followers. The series will explore the historical context\, symbols\, and meaning of this powerful and moving story.

SUMMARY:Job and the Problem of Suffering
DESCRIPTION:Group: Engaging the Word (Bible Series) \nIn Room 203 \nLed by the Rev. Dr. Christopher D. Girata \nSundays\, February 7-28 \nWhy is there such suffering? Where is God when life is painful or unjust? Join our Rector\, Chris Girata\, for a four-week exploration of the Book of Job\, one of Scripture’s most powerful examinations of suffering\, faith\, and the mystery of God. Along the way\, we will wrestle with the problem of evil and pain in the world and consider why Scripture sometimes challenges easy explanations for suffering. Together\, we will ask what Job can teach us about how we can remain faithful to God when life does not make sense.

SUMMARY:Prayer Book Spirituality: Reconciliation
DESCRIPTION:Group: Faith and Practice Series \nIn Room 201 \nLed by the Rev. Kenneth H. Brannon \nSundays\, February 7-21 \n“All may\, some should\, none must.” Many of us have heard this famous saying about confession in The Episcopal Church. We don’t demand that everyone partakes of this sacrament\, but those who have experienced it can tell you it’s a source of deep joy\, freedom\, and healing. In this class\, we will consider the biblical\, theological\, and psychological rationales for repentance and forgiveness. We will look at how this rite has evolved over time and across denominations. And we will walk through the two forms of reconciliation provided in our prayer book\, so participants can consider whether they might be called to partake of this sacramental gift\, particularly in Lent.
